In today’s class, we discussed the documentary movie called "Corporation" Part 4.
First-class was mainly about privatization and publication. Nowadays, water, gas, police, library, and medical care including ambulances are starting to get privatized. This is happening around the world including in developed and developing countries. These basic infrastructures are indispensable in our daily lives and can be life-threatening when missing. In my opinion, these should not be administered by corporations and companies which have their main aim of making benefits. When companies try to maximize the profit, the burden of the people is also maximized, resulting in bigger disparity.
Secondly, I connected social studies class with what we learned today and thought about what is happening in Japan. In social studies class, we compared big government and small government. Privatization often happens in countries with a small government and low taxes such as the United States. On the other hand, many things are publicized in countries with a big government with a large amount of tax, especially in Europe. Public enterprises lead to economic recovery in case of economic recession like what we are experiencing now in a pandemic because they do not fire employees. However, although a small government is risky, it minimizes the burden for taxpayers. I feel like a trade-off happens between these two choices. However, some countries such as Bolivia are obligated to privatize.
Lastly, we learned about the relationship between children and advertisements. In Sweden, no children advertisement is allowed which I never knew. In my opinion, advertisements for children should not be banned in Japan. Mainly because nagging is a very natural act for children and experience brought out from the advertisement can give a positive effect on the children. Disneyland, Legoland, and toys undeniably made my young life better and I was able to make numerous memories through that experience. However, I can also understand the claim that children's advertisement is ethically challenged and has the possibility to give out a negative influence on people’s mental health. I believe companies need to hire mentalists not only to sell the commodities.
