The Kite Runner Chapter 14
Chapter 14 depicts what happened in June 2001, one turning point of life for Amir. The storyline completely connected with chapter 1 when Amir got a phone call from Rahim Khan. Rahim continued living in Pakistan while many Afghans including Baba and Amir left their homeland. He was old and very sick, Amir knew the first reunion after long years might become the last time to spend with Rahim. On the phone, he told Amir, ''Come. There is a way to be good again.'' Rahim Khan knew all. All about Assef, the kite, the money, the watch, and every Amir's sin. Maybe, something in his bottomless black eyes hinted at an unspoken secret of Amir. This explains why he kept on giving Amir an odd glance after the Kite flying tournament.
Hosseini also focused on Soraya's family. Khala Jamila always dedicated herself to general and the way she lives for her husband was too heartbreaking. General had a mental and physical illness that suffered him all the time and Khala ended up being soliloquies about her own health. She truly loved singing but as general couldn't understand her music, she always sang at him sleeping. On the other hand, Soraya and general's relationship improved and they finally got out of a vicious circle which was similar to the change that happened to Baba and Amir before Baba's death. Maybe, fathers' frailty and time softened things between parent and child. He became more acceptable to Soraya's work as a teacher.
Amir and Soraya's emptiness at night continued from Chapter 13. I assume Amir's trip to Pakistan would somehow change the current situation. In the bottomless darkness, Amir once again dreamed of Hassan yelling, ''For you, thousand times over!!''
