In today's class, we watched Michael Moore's documentary movie, "THE CORPORATION". Through the introduced examples in the movie, it was proven that every corporation desire to get the benefit. And for them, even war or social problems are factors to maximize the benefit. I believe this is against human nature and is in a highly unethical state. However, corporations are getting increasingly creative and clever in terms of marketing and the public general can be easily manipulated.
A good example of manipulation uses different types of accent that people feel trustworthy of. In the UK, the Scottish accent is considered reliable and trustable compared to BBC Accent, East London accent, royal family accent, and city London accent. This study plays a role in the advertisement industry. In Japan, I believe Tokyo Accent is the most trustworthy. Firstly, most Japanese people are able to understand it and the accent has the ability to reach everyone around the country. Secondly, the Tokyo accent has a formal and polite image. Tokyo accent can naturally weave Keigo(respectful language) in daily conversation. However, most dialects do not have this characteristic which makes them seen as informal and casual. In my opinion, dialects can be used to give out a unique vibe, such as Kyoto Dialect for a classy, traditional Japanese vibe, and Osaka dialect for a bright and friendly vibe. Throughout the discussion with my classmates, I noticed that these images are hugely influenced by the historical background of the region. As the culture and language are strongly connected, I am worried that the current situation on the spread of Tokyo Accent and a small number of young people who learned dialect can result in cultural loss.
